Real Madrid finished tonight the job they’ve started working on a few weeks back. Yet again, they’ve beaten Schalke 04 and went on to the quarterfinals on aggregate score of 9:2. Ronaldo scored twice. Morata added one more for the home team, while Tim Hoogland gave Schalke 04 fans something to cheer for, at least for a while.
At fifth minute, Jese was tackled down under the challenge from Kolašinac, and went out of the game due to the injury. After some nice build-up play between Schalke players, Huntelaar received the ball and tried to shoot from the edge of the box. Casillas reacted well and saved his goal.
At the 21st minute Morata passed the ball to Bale, who crossed it to Ronaldo inside the six yard box. Real Madrid attacker found it easy to hit the net from that distance. It was 1:0 for the home team.
A couple of minutes later Maorata missed great opportunity. Bale found him inside the box, but 21-year old blew the chance to get himself on the score sheet.
Schalke 04 punished it with an equalizer. Tim Hoogland ran forward towards the goal, tried his luck with a right footed shot, the ball deflected off Ramos, tricked Casillas and nestled in the bottom corner of the Real Madrid goal.
Isco then saw his curled attempt saved by Fahrmann, who also denied Alvaro Morata yet again with an amazing save.
Four minutes before the half time, Huntelaar picked up Meyer pass and squeezed a shot at Casillas but it went inches wide. Unlucky for him.
The Schalke 04 goalkeeper Fahrmann had another great save seven minutes after the restart. Ronaldo was in a great position to score, but his header was denied by the goalkeeper’s fantastic reflex save. Just two minutes after that he denied Isco’s attempt, after Ronaldo’s pass.
The Schalke 04 team was holding on for a positive result considering what happened in the first leg. But, in just two minutes they conceded two goals. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 13th goal of the competition in the 74th minute, while Morata finally made his mark on the game, with a simple tap-in. Gareth Bale was the assist man once again.
With four minutes left on the clock, Isco had one final opportunity to get himself some laurels, but his shot blazed over the bar. It all ended up with the score of 3:1 for the home team. Real Madrid qualified for the quarterfinals with 9:2 aggregate score.
