Test matches in Women’s cricket are generally quite rare. Once in a while the women cricketers get the opportunity to play the longest format of the game. The last Test between India Women and South Africa Women was only the 137th Test match in Women’s cricket.
In a one-off Test match played at Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadeyar Ground, Mysore. India Women thrashed South Africa Women by an innings and 34 runs. India Women team has achieved their second Test victory on the trot.
Centuries from the Thirush Kamini (192) and Poonam Raut (130) imposed enough scoreboard pressure for Harmanpreet Kaur to run through South Africa Women twice.
Thirush Kamini opened the batting and scored 192. She has now become the second highest scorer for India in Women’s Tests. Skipper Mithali Raj’s 214 against England women at Taunton in 2002 is still the highest Test score for India. On the same list, Poonam Raut’s 130 is this placed in sixth position.
It was the first time two Indian batswomen have scored hundreds in the same innings.
India had won the toss and they followed their men in piling up huge total of 400. Just after first early break-though, South African women literally had nothing to cheer about in the match. The first day belonged to India Women as only one wicket of Smrithi Mandhana, who was dismissed for 8, fell that day.
Kamini and Raut made a 275-run second-wicket record partnership that actually flattened South Africa. Kamini’s 192 took 430 balls, with 24 four and a six. Raut struck 130 off 255 balls, with 18 fours. India declared on 400 for 6. South African offspinner S. Loubser grabbed three wickets.
It can be said that South Africa Women is in the making as eight of the eleven were making their debuts, including Captain Mignon du Preez. She made 102 off 253 balls and struck 15 fours. She added 102 runs for the fifth wicket with Trisha Chetty, who reached her maiden fifty.
Seamer Kaur took 5 for 44, while R. Gayakwad’s got four wickets. At one point, South Africa were placed comfortably at 209 for 4. Then they collapsed from 234 for 6 to 234 all out.
After follow-on, South Africa Women could only made 132. Chetty, after first innings 56 made 35 off 131 balls. She was the top score. Five batswomen could not even enter in double-digits. Kaur once again was the pick of the bowlers as she picked up 4 for 41 to finish with 9 for 85 for the match. It is the second-best figures by an Indian bowler.
This triumph of India Women is only their fifth Test victory. It was also the first time for India in Women’s Tests that two Indian bowlers have taken four wickets in an innings.
