Sebastian Vettel has continued his tradition to name his Formula 1 cars. According to Bild, Red Bull’s 2013 car RB9 is now called Hungry Heidi.
The young German driver is known not only for his three consecutive world titles but also for his quirky choice of helmets and for giving strange female names to his cars. In 2009 he had Kate and Kate’s Dirty Sister and nearly won the world title with them. In 2010 Luscious Liz and Randy Mandy made him the youngest world champion in F1 history. Kinky Kylie (RB8) was a complete stunner in 2011 with 11 wins in 19 races. Abbey was not so dominant in 2012 (only 5 wins) but again made Vettel the world champion. Now, it is the turn of Hungry Heidi.
The name is an obvious reference towards the German model (and Flavio Briatore’s ex-girlfriend) Heidi Klum, just like the Kinky Kylie was named after the Australian singer Kylie Minogue. Vettel, however, has still not explained where the Hungry part comes from. Some guesses suggest it refers to RB9’s unappealing ability to “eat” tyres fast, while other think it refers to Vettel’s own hunger to win more.
Aged 25, the German is already a legend of the sport with three world titles. Only Alain Prost, Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher have won more WDCs than Vettel. It seems with Hungry Heidi Vettel is trying to remind the opposition in F1 that he is still motivated for more success even without moving to Ferrari.
On Friday morning, the F1 world will see exactly how hungry Heidi is when FP1 in Melbourne starts.
