Paul Scholes announces his retirement

Manchester United midfielder and a member of the Class of '92 Paul Scholes has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36Scholes made his United debut in 1994 and has won 19 major honors. He made 676 appearances for the club and will now take a coaching role at the club from the 2011-12 season.

"This was not a decision I've taken lightly but I feel now is the right time for me to stop playing," he said. "I am not a man of many words but I can honestly say that playing football is all I have ever wanted to do and to have had such a long and successful career at Manchester United has been a real honor.

"To have been part of the team that helped the club reach that 19th title is a great privilege."

Scholes last game for the club was the Champions League final against Barcelona which United lost 3-1.

Sir Alex Ferguson also paid tribute to Scholes. "Paul has always been inspirational to players of all ages and we know that will continue in his new role," he added.

Scholes has 66 England caps and retired from the national team in 2004.
