With Bayern obtaining the signature of Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Götze, questions were asked about Kroos’ position in the future Bayern squad but it has now been revealed that the young midfielder will most probably sign an extension to keep him at the club.
23-year-old Kroos, who is the preferred central attacking midfielder for Bayern, has been sidelined with a hip injury sustained in the first leg of the match against Juventus. He also recently underwent successful knee surgery, which he claimed will have no effect on his return date.
With new coach Pep Guardiola and new mega signing Mario Götze to arrive in the summer, Kroos’ position in the team seemed to be in jeopardy and many questions were raised about his future. 20-year-old Götze plays in the same position as Kroos and will join him as competition along with Thomas Müller and Xherdan Shaqiri for the single position in the hole behind the lone striker – although that formation might change with the arrival of Guardiola.
German newspaper kicker reported that Kroos will sign a contract extension that will bind him to Bayern until 2018. His current contract lasts until 2015 and rumours had been rife about his plans to leave the club after it expires.
However, it was reported that the discussions regarding the contract extension are “very promising and nearing completion.”
There is speculation about whether the arrival of new coach Guardiola will result in the sale of some key players, including Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben, as well as the decision to let veterans Daniel Van Buyten and Claudio Pizarro leave the club.
